Finding Accommodation

There are many different types of accommodation to be found in Finland but please be prepared to book in advance if you plan on traveling during the high season from June to late August. There are hosts of quality hotels to be found in all of the larger cities, while you will have to settle for a lower standard in some of the smaller towns and villages. If traveling by car in the summer, don't hesitate using the camping ground which are abundant throughout the land. They are often well equipped with good toilets and showers.

Here's just a short list of recommended places to. It is by no means meant to be a thorough list but merely a good starting point.

Sokos Hotel Ilves, Tampere



This relatively new hotel has a very central location by the Tammerkoski rapids in the centre of Tampere. It can especially be recommended for young travellers because of the world-class night club in its basement. It also has very high class sauna facilities which can be rented for bigger groups.

Hotel Kämp, Helsinki



This hotel, founded in 1887, is possibly the most luxurious hotel in Finland and definitely the place to stay at if you are used to a high standard with your hotels. If you fly to Helsinki and plan on starting your Finnish journey fron there, a night here before heading off is a great plan.

This brand new hotel chain is currently servicing Tampere, Ruka, Vaasa, and Turku and will start servicing Pori and Helsinki late this summer. It is definitely the choice for you if you're looking for decent quality at very affordable prices. The idea behind these hotels is that everything is automated so don't expect to see any hotel staff!

Camping sites



Camping sites are abundant in Finland and definitely the right choice if you're traveling in the summer. Here are a few camping sites in interesting locations.

- Rasua Camping is a modern three star camping site situated in Jämsänkoski in Central Finland. They are open between 1st of June and 28th of August 2005 and other times by agreement. This is also the location for the famous Rasua Beach Party during Juhannus.

- Hanko Camping Silversand is located by the sea in the southernmost tip of Finland, 3 kilometres from the centre of Hanko and about an hours drive from Helsinki. This camping ground comes highly recommended and has good facilities.

- The mamansalo five star camping site is located 150 km east of the lovely city of Oulu in northern Finland on the shores of the beautiful lake Oulujärvi. The island is surrounded by the magnificent recreational area of Oulujärvi. The area’s sandy beaches and numerous outdoor activities make this a perfect place to spend a fun-filled summer holiday. Cabins available from the beginning of March to the end of September.
